Purpose of the residency

In Berlin, parts of the broadcasting spectrum have been allocated to citizen and community radio. The ideas behind Germany’s free radio movement can be traced back to Bertolt Brecht’s writings on radio in 1932. Around the same period, the Nazi regime distributed the inexpensive Volksempfänger (“People’s Receiver”), designed to restrict access to foreign broadcasts. Some citizens, however, modifi ed these receivers or built their own radios to access alternative information. By examining these contrasting histories of citizen radio and the Volksempfänger, I aim to investigate alternative forms of communication within Berlin’s historical and contemporary contexts. Alongside this research, I plan to present my work and engage with local artists through performances, exhibitions, and other forms of exchange.
