Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) presents ACT (Artists Contemporary TOKAS) Vol. 8 “Of the Land,” a group exhibition exploring the connection between people and the land. Nature offers blessings and, at times, unleashes overwhelming force, shaping both the physical and spiritual lives of those who inhabit it. This exhibition considers how we might retain a sense of our intrinsic bond with the land in an age when the landscape is shifting rapidly, and losing its distinct identity.
Each of the three participating artists explores the concept “being of the land” from their individual perspectives. Akahane Fumiaki evokes a subterranean world and how his inner world resonates with this through painting. Kukita Akane investigates the relationship between nature and humans through sculptural works inspired by ornamentation. Yamada Sanae uses video to examine how natural disasters and human responses reveal our connection with the land.
Through the practices of these three artists, this exhibition invites viewers to reconsider how our lives and the land we inhabit are interconnected.

The Tokyo Contemporary Art Award (TCAA) organized by Tokyo Metropolitan Government and TOKAS, is a contemporary art award for mid-career artists. Two artists are selected for each award, and in the second year of a multi-year program of support such as TCAA-funded activities overseas, award exhibitions are held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT). The TCAA 2024-2026 exhibition is held at the MOT featuring Umeda Tetsuya and Oh Haji, the winners of the fifth edition of the award.

TOKAS Residency provides opportunities for international and local creators in various disciplines including visual art, design, architecture and curation to stay, create works and conduct research in Tokyo, offering studio spaces and accommodation. This Open Studio is a special occasion for the audience to see the creative process of residing creators.

“TOKAS-Emerging” is a program that Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) launched in 2001 with the aim to support young artists. Targeting Japanese resident artists aged 35 or younger, the program offers selected artists opportunities to hold their solo exhibition. For “TOKAS-Emerging 2026,” six artists were selected through screenings from a total of 186 applications from across Japan.
Held in two separate periods between April and June 2026, these exhibitions of works by up-and-coming artists cover a wide range of formats, including paintings, prints, video art, installations, etc. On the respective opening days, the exhibiting artists will also appear in talk session together with jury members.
