Purpose of the residency

My artistic practice explores “alternative folklore” by reexamining stories, rituals, and collective memories rooted in specific places through the lens of contemporary society. The purpose of participating in this program is to deepen my research on the relationship between folklore and contemporary society in Ireland, where folklore and the Irish language played an important role in the formation of national identity during the independence movement. Through fieldwork, observation, and dialogue with local researchers and residents, I aim to expand the perspectives developed in my previous projects and further develop my artistic practice. I hope to gain new insights that will contribute to the creation of future works and research.

Plan during the residency
  • Visit mythological sites and places associated with folklore in Dublin and its surrounding areas, and investigate the relationship between folklore, urban development, and tourism.
  • Research seasonal festivals and folk beliefs, particularly Samhain, and examine the role that folklore plays in contemporary communities and urban life.
  • Conduct interviews with folklore researchers and residents to investigate contemporary forms of folklore and their relationship to everyday life.
  • Document insights, observations, and impressions gained through fieldwork and interviews through daily drawings and written notes.
  • Based on the research, reflect on the relationship between folklore and contemporary society in Ireland, and undertake experiments and preliminary studies for the development of new artworks.
