I wish to use the TOKAS residency to develop a curatorial understanding of how biotechnology erases agricultural heritage in India and Japan — two deeply rice-centric cultures facing similar pressures from corporate monocultures. Tokyo's proximity to rice-growing regions, institutions such as the Meiji University Museum and the Shonai Museum of the History of Rice, and a thriving bioart community will allow me to conduct fieldwork and, build collaborations with Japanese artists and scientists.
• Archival and institutional research at Meiji University Museum, Shonai Museum of the History of Rice (Sakata), and National Museum of Ethnology. Fieldwork visits to heritage rice-growing regions in Niigata Prefecture.
• Collaborative workshops with Tokyo-based artists, scientists, and community groups, facilitated through Bioclub Tokyo and Japan Seed Savers Network. Sessions will use design thinking and reflective arts practices to explore genetic decolonization.
