Purpose of the residency

This project researches the characteristics of Montreal's contemporary performance/art scene—how it came into being and where it stands today—and draws comparisons with Tokyo's. In particular, it examines artists and practices that resonate with Takemoto's own performance work, which has been cultivated against the backdrop of Tokyo's performance art context, shedding light on the similarities and differences between them.
Taking this comparative exploration of performance/art as a point of departure, the research expands into broader historical, social, and environmental comparisons between the two cities, with the ultimate aim of discovering new perspectives on both Montreal and Tokyo.

Plan during the residency
  • Conducting interviews primarily with art professionals, and researching the performance and art scenes
  • Investigating the history of settler colonialism in Canada, the histories and relationships among its various ethnic groups and communities, and their impact on contemporary society
  • Examining tensions between Anglophone and Francophone Canada, as well as tensions with the United States, Europe, and the Arctic region
  • Documenting and investigating how daily performance practice transforms the artist herself, and how these changes are shaped by differences in climate and social environment
  • Comparing research findings with the conditions and historical context of Tokyo
