Purpose of the residency

I plan to realize a project Sun of the City to create a sundial as public art to reflect on identity and place by reconsidering the rules and systems of time and timekeeping, which we usually unconsciously perceive as correct (but which historically can also be a symbol of power). I will also share and document the process of its creation.

Plan during the residency
  • Research of the city landscape
  • Realization of a site-specific sundial as a mural (or by other means)
  • Share the process and intent of the project with the local community
  • Documentation of the production process
Activities during the residency

Timekeeping and its historical symbolism have been reexamined, alongside research into the landscape of Los Angels. The project "Sun of the City" was realized as a wall painting at the 18th Street Arts Center. During this process, an experimental prototype for Handwriting of the Construction Site was developed. In June, an open studio and a public event for "Sun of the City" titled "‘Sun of the City’ Mural Opening" were held.

Outcome of the residency

The planned project was successfully realized. Meeting and receiving support from many people during the process was a great experience. Additionally, during the research and production process, prototypes of other works were created, and new ideas for projects emerged, which are intended to be developed further in the future. After staying for about three months, there is a stronger motivation to explore the possibilities of working in the US in the future.
