Purpose of the residency

The residency at Tokyo Arts and Space takes the form of a multidisciplinary project at the intersection of art and architecture. Through the creation of portable architectures, performative interventions and photographs, the project takes as its object of study the phenomenon of inemuri, a practice specific to Japan that consists in sleeping in public spaces. Through a playful and poetic approach, the project materializes in a series of portable resting cells. Scenes of subjects sleeping in public space with these devices are then photographed and relate the activations created in collaboration with Japanese participants.

Plan during the residency
  • intersection of art and architecture / portable architecture
  • phenomenom of "inemuri"
  • chochin technique
  • material research : fabric, polypropylene, paper
Activities during the residency

During this residency, I studied the phenomenon of “居眠り inemuri”, a Japanese practice that consists in sleeping in public spaces. At the intersection of art and architecture, the project took the form of a portable resting cell, designed to provide a more intimate space for the sleeper's experience. Through a playful and poetic approach, scenes of subjects sleeping with this device were then photographed in the urban landscape of Tokyo, recounting the activations created in collaboration with the Japanese participants.

Outcome of the residency

This residency provided the space and time to conduct theoretical research into a specific sleep practice in Japan. This period also presented an opportunity to develop material research that was a process-based experience. Alongside this research, I was also very interested in the public artworks I encountered in different environments, notably in the city of Tokyo and on the island of Naoshima. These artistic encounters brought me into a dimension that resonated strongly with my artistic desires and visions. This combination of research led me to develop a deeper interest in design and architectural practices. In connection with this interest, I've had the good fortune to meet many talented designers and architects, such as Japanese designer Shigeki Fujishiro and Korean designer Kuo Duo, with whom I've had the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience on a material level. I also received a generous invitation from Yosuke Komiyama, architect and associate professor, to participate as a guest critic in the final review of the design studio at Kyoto University. During this trip to Kyoto, I had the pleasure of meeting students from the architecture department and interacting with them as a guest critic for their final work, but I also had the chance to present my first prototype and share my process while receiving their ideas and comments. Finally, I had the chance to meet architects Takatoku Nishi and Yumeo Nakayama, with whom I had the opportunity and great pleasure of exchanging material, theoretical and historical views.
Influenced by these rich experiences, I can now identify more precisely the influence of design and architecture on my personal practice, but also how it might benefit future projects. I'm looking forward to integrating these influences and notions into my future projects, notably by developing new working tools, imagining larger-scale projects, collaborating with designers and architects and so on.
