I am in the TOKAS residency by invitation and recommendation from the Japan Foundation to conduct research on current contemporary art practices by Japan-based Japanese artists. Through artist studio visits along with meetings and discussions with Japanese contemporary art curators, I seek to discover the current pulse of and discussions in Tokyo’s contemporary art scene and how it relates to, or differs from, practices in Dubai and Berlin, where my practices currently lie. I am also sharing my experiences being a multi-disciplinary arts and culture practitioner to the wider Japanese contemporary art community, raising awareness and sharing my experience of being a Filipino creative making artistic work and generating research in the Gulf region.
I visited various contemporary and modern art museums and Japanese artist studios in Tokyo, Kanazawa, and Kyoto. I also had both formal and informal meetings with various curators and artists to discuss the nature of their work in and outside of the Japanese context. I attended various exhibition openings and book launches within Japan’s contemporary art scene. I also presented about my artistic practice during TOKAS’ open studios day. In addition, I spent time getting to know the other residents and their artistic practice.
I hope to curate an exhibition with one of the artists that I met and continue to build relationships with both the curators and artists that I interacted with during the trip.
