My research during the stay in TOKAS residency focuses on the theme 'Japan in 1945'. In the year, Japan accepted the call for unconditional surrender and thus became subservient to the Occupation of the GHQ chiefly composed of American soldiers and civilians. This has left the enduring influence on the construction of the identity of post-war Japan (and those who reside there). In this research, I would like to examine what insight might be generated regarding the change in the mentality of the Japanese through the analysis of visual materials concerning the occupation and the interview survey with specialists of different fields. I hope this research would contribute to a modest step toward an alternative understanding of the Cold War historiography by proposing a new methodology integrating artistic practice for addressing the contested issues that stem from the occupation period.
-Interview with specialists (e.g., historians and media theorists)
-Survey on newspaper materials at National Diet Library
-Analysis of the photographs concerning the occupation period
-Consideration about how to integrate the findings through the above research into my artwork
