In relation to my recent activity which focuses on Japan's encounter with western notion of "art", the residency in Matadero Madrid will enable me to deeply inquire into this issue, because Spain was the first European country which had an impact on Japan more than 400years ago. Up to the present time, Japanese people consider Pablo Picasso or Salvador Dali, those who are Spanish great masters, as the prototypes of "artist". Thus, it must be a great opportunity to delve into the problems of "the prototype of artist" or "the essence of art" for Japanese people through coming in touch with Spanish landscape, people, language, culture and social issues.
Āto (Original Ver.) is a video work that consists of footages, which shows myself talking the issue of the "essence of art" in front of masterpieces, artist's studio, people who are touring to watch artworks. This work makes audiences realize the fictitious concept of art.
During my residency, after completing my research, I will make Āto (Spain Ver.) based on my impression about Spanish views of art and artists. I, as a tourist and an artist, will shoot a selfie video against the background of Spanish masterpieces and landscapes.
Finally I would like to make an opportunity to exhibit Āto (Original Ver.) and Āto (Spain Ver.) in a same place. Through showing these two movies, both of which are shooting myself, I think I can reveal the specific conditions or history of "art" in two countries.
