At the residency, I am going to develop the concept and work for my project "Roadside Picnic" which I began in 2014. Mainly this concerns collecting and documenting litter, researching and experimenting with materials and techniques, and researching post-colonialism and the religion and culture of people who are in a vulnerable position in society. Through these activities, I will consider the possibilities relationships between "myself" and "others" in a society that is made up of different value systems. Within such a society, I will look at the role of art and the possibility of the artwork itself being independent. I aim to create a place/landscape that reflects these thoughts, and further develop the work and concept.
・In this project, I will visit shopping districts frequented by various classes of people and collect litter, as well as observe and document, through photos and video, the environment surrounding the spots where I find the litter. This activity is a means to research the ideology behind the act of consuming and behind the desires of contemporary people, in a global and a local context.
・ I will research the culture of people who occupy a weak position in society, such as crafts or shamanism, and mainly those customs inherited by women, thereby understanding better how such culture has been passed down.
・ Using documents related to post-colonial studies in the West, as well as colonialism and post-colonialism by Japan, and by visiting historic sites, I will deepen my understanding.
・ Visiting famous pottery centers such as Icheon-si, Gwangju-si, and Gangjin-gun and studying materials and techniques there will allow me to re-examine the material aspects of my own work.
