The Research Residency at Tokyo Wonder Site creates an opportunity to live and work in a city that is both an engine of contemporary global capital and part of a rich historical tradition of marketplace culture. In Tokyo, I will be researching less well-known, experimental forms of exchange occuring in urban and digital spaces. Tokyo Wonder Site provides a platform for connecting to creative agents in the city who are the producers or contributors to these alternative economies.
During my stay at Tokyo Wonder Site, I will be researching models for alternative economic practices that currently exist in the city of Tokyo. These may include local skillshares, barter networks, alternative currencies, time banking, and other forms of economic experimentation. Through interviews and engagement with various participants across the city, I will learn about the ways in which the residents and creative agents of Tokyo create their own platforms for connection and exchange with others.
