Purpose of the residency

Since many years I am fascinated about the strong creative scene in Japan. With my great experiences 2010 as an exchange student at Tama Art University my wish to further work creatively in Tokyo increased and deepened my conviction in the need and sense of cultural interaction. Last summer I started my photography project " About Friendship", a series of portraits in Tokyo with always two best friends. I would like to research how you can make feelings of friendship visible. How can you express this feeling in a photo or video? What are the differences between a friendship lived in Japan and one lived in Berlin, Germany? What connects all of us? I am very much drawn to the possibility of interacting with Japanese people and artists and am very interested in discovering the parallels between our cultures and perspectives and seeing this greater diversity.

Plan during the residency

Photographing pairs of friends--people I had met and just people on the street. Ask them questions about their friendship. Explore new ways of capturing the emotions and the interplay between people. What does friendship look like? Is there a language of friendship which is universal, going beyond the boundaries of a country? Is there a language in behaviour, in caring, in spoken words or in the way that one treats another? How can this universal human experiences be expressed visually? Which are the portraits that express the deepest, subtlest connections between people? I will explore ways to express these ideas in objects, pictures or video.
