Purpose of the residency
"The Love of Objects" What is it that makes one object something you want to cherish and another, something you want to throw away? I propose to investigate in Japan how these values and connections are made and why they are so powerful. Through my previous work I have brought people together through objects and making, placing emphasis on participation and 'practical knowledge' as form of practice. At the Tokyo Wonder Site Residency I propose to bring people and their cherished object together to document this invisible and unexplained tie, connecting external objects with internal worlds. We live in a world of objects made by machine and hand, what makes 'speaking objects'
Plan during the residency
The Love of Objects: -Bring people of all ages together around objects to talk, think and 'open up' what makes an object special to them. -Curate an exhibition based on loved objects and the people who love them. -Begin to create an image archive of these objects, the people and their stories. -Consider how a group of Japanese people speak of theirs object and the objects speak of them.
