Purpose of the residency
In my recent work I have acted as a mediator-artist, trying to help people in some specific way after noticing and identifying their needs. I would like to continue this approach during my residency in 2011. Recently, while in Cambodia, I watched a television interview with a man, a farmer, in the Fukashima affected area. The government had asked him to leave his land and offered him approximately 10,000USD to do so. But he does not want to leave, and perhaps even today there is no resolution. This story of the farmer inspired me to want to visit this tsunami and nuclear effected area to do some research with people. I will travel by bus or train. I will keep a diary throughout, and develop artworks from this experience with the people as a way to help them find solutions, if only symbolic in nature.
