| Content | OPEN SITE is a program aimed at creating a platform that brings together a full range of projects seeking to create new forms of expression across all genres, open to society. In this third year of the program, in addition to our past exhibition and performance projects, we have newly established OPEN SITE dot for small experimental projects. After rigorous review, nine projects have been selected, including exhibitions, performance works, theater works and more, from numerous applications from Japan and overseas. Moreover, a total of 11 projects will be implemented including the TOKAS Recommendation Program and educational programs. As the cross-genre and interdisciplinary nature of art continues to evolve, you can rely on us to host programs of ambitious self-expression, of free and powerful artistic will, without being constrained by existing genres. |

OPEN SITE is composed of three streams: an exhibition stream showing selected exhibitions of varying natures, including individual exhibitions, group exhibitions, workshops, festival showcases, and more; a performance stream in which musical and theatrical presentations are distinguished by methodologies very different from performances based in theater or halls; and OPEN SITE dot, which centers on audience participation and research/presentations.
This is the third OPEN SITE event, and it leaves me with the strong impression that more than ever, this program seeks projects that transcend genre. Nevertheless, the sense of vertical division among genres still seems to linger, and trends for each of the three events have also been quite disparate year-on-year. Regardless, one clear aspect of appraisal is strong curation by the project organizers. I hope that amongst other things, the artists' clear intentions in not knowing what will occur as part of their works will result in their realization as projects that further traverse style and genre - the works themselves being genreless to begin with.

There were three aspects to my interest in selection: whether the work is responsive to the times and to society; whether it is appealing enough to move the audience emotionally; and whether there is some possibility of making an external connection. Every project we've adopted has its own unique appeal as well as prospects for future development. In addition to enough space and money to undertake their presentations, the creators have also received advice from the wealth of experience at OPEN SITE, and have benefited from wonderful circumstances and opportunities to embody their ideas. Honestly, I hope they do not fit the TOKAS Hongo performance or exhibition framework too perfectly, too beautifully. To shake up, refresh, update, and expand OPEN SITE, we rely on the creators who use it. Audience members occasionally become participants; I sense that they may stumble into special experiences. I want to tell them, "Expect great things!" There were many other interesting projects that we did not eventually adopt, but these were just a single step away from the adopted projects in terms of the ultimate clarity of the work's vision. I have high expectations of them when the next challenge rolls around.

We received a lot of entries for incredibly interesting projects and selection was difficult. During the selection process, I made my judgment according to two criteria.
The first was to evaluate the interest, practicality, and innovation of the project itself at this OPEN SITE, rather than consider the creator's career and past achievements. Many exhibition-type projects had been carefully planned and prepared. On the other hand--and this may be related to the style of expression--for the performance-type events, it was disappointing to see that despite their significant achievements, many projects were unclear on precisely what would be achieved in this project and how much preparation had been undertaken.
My second criterion was critical interrogation of art and society. We are currently experiencing great upheavals ranging from politics, economy, and society to technology and the natural environment. What can (or cannot) art achieve in such an era? This is called strongly into question.
I believe that all of the projects selected for this event were clearly outstanding in regard to these two criteria. I look forward to seeing the actual projects.

Although open to all forms of expression, the projects selected from among the numerous applicants all demonstrated strong framing despite their experimental qualities. For this year's event, we have established a framework for comparatively small-scale projects capable of being implemented in a few days or so, with an emphasis on process and preparation periods including symposia and workshops. The word "dot" has overtones of "small but strong," expressing our high expectations that these projects will help expand the OPEN SITE framework.
This year, we have a greater variety of genres than last year. In performance planning, intentionally implementing works in spaces different from usual tends not only to be difficult but also gravitate toward encounters with different levels. Exhibition projects that incorporate both interactive and performative elements may demonstrate further possibilities of the site. We will see diverse expressions and diverse efforts inhabit the same space, one after another, and I look forward to seeing the essential core of creativity emerge comparatively.
