Marianna CHRISTOFIDES

Profile

Cyprus-born Berlin-based interdisciplinary artist working across installation, still and moving image and text. She holds an MA in Experimental Film from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) and majored in Painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Christofides co-represented Cyprus at the 54th Venice Biennale.

About works

My practice is driven by an urgency to remain attentive to disregarded or silenced undercurrents of environmental and societal ruptures. In extensive, material engagements with bruised geographies I attempt to negotiate violence and precarity of ecosystems and lifeworlds vis-à-vis signs of human and more-than-human resilience. Activated by encounters in places scarred by human activity I am guided by the quiet hum of energy forces that have the capacity to transform adversity into potential, hardship into hope. Peripheric, small-scale manifestations of care, dedication and devotion mark the path. In order to listen into embodied ecologies of knowledge I collaborate with artists from diverse fields, activists, scientists and scholars. This process materializes in installations, 16mm films, exploratory cinematic readings and sound pieces.
