Purpose of the residency

Lien-Cheng want to collect discard or second-hand dot-matrix printer in Japan. And he wants to refit them and makes them come back to life via the data of internet. They will become symphony orchestras using their origin mechanical sound. The Internet is itself a stream from which data, consisting of code. Lien-Cheng will convert the Internet data - source code - into dot-matrix printers' physical motion, thus making the activity of search to the Internet both visible and audible. Moreover, by putting a large quantity of dot-matrix printer together, he wants to immerse the audience in the grand informational torrent materialized by the collective action. The mechanic movement shall create a space undefined, moving, developing, melodious the body all the time.

Plan during the residency

- Lien-Cheng will teach participants how to build an audio-visual performance with Max MSP via a workshop.
- Following his workshop, Lien-Cheng Wang will deliver an artist talk on his practice around generative art, as well as a performance, titled Horizon.
- Collect second-hand or discarded dot-matrix printers in Japan, and refit them to an artwork.
