I am researching zero carbon methods for modifying the air in interiors, looking into passive humidifiers dehumidifiers, air purification, and air conditioning. I am influenced by the work of Mono Ha artists, in seeking to activate the relation between visible and invisible structures, specifically in relation to air quality and the weather. I am interested in sensory concepts emerging from Japanese environmental philosophy, ie. Watsuji Tetsurô's concept of "betweenness" as a possible ethical proposal through which to consider shifting perceptions of the complexities of climate, comfort, and architecture. I aim to produce experimental spatial compositions that position atmosphere and air as central to the experience of being inside built space.
The aim of my program of work is to examine working relationships between weather (and by extension climate) and built environments. How do we engage in an awareness of the systems, objects and materials that make interior spaces livable and breathable? Can such an awareness lead to critical and ethical shifts in the way energy is consumed and conserved?
I will do research in and around the city that locates buildings of interest and sources potential materials for eventual creative production. Structures and systems of interest include: Metabolist architecture, seismic retrofit projects, tower damper/pendulum projects, building deconstruction techniques, materials recycling, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems that function in alternative ways.
I'll also be investigating "setsuden" methods and effects of ethical campaigns to decrease the energy demand of air conditioning, will be working on designs for passive air modifiers that also function as sculptures, and will work on a video that enfolds haptic and tactile aspects of the built environment.
