During the TOKAS residency I intend to continue my exploration of various perfomative readings of the late Czech philosopher Vilem Flusser's 'Techno Imagination', in this case in relation to some of the radical movements that emerged over the postwar period of Japanese art, particularly the emergent format of 'happenings', considering such groups as Gutai, Hi-Red Centre and Jikken Kobo. These movements through the 1950's -70's coincided with a pronounced shift towards the mediation of the world through the 'technical image'. I propose to explore whether this corresponding shift in the art world towards the 'live', experiential and inter-disciplinary within these 'happenings' could be read in relation to Flusser's 'techno imagination'- as performative strategy for decoding and understanding an increasingly technically coded world.
