During my time at Tokyo Wonder Site, I will be specifically focusing on researching the history and development of Japanese performance art through specific artists and collectives that were active from the 1960s -1970s. Speaking to art historians, activists, galleriest, curators, journalist and artists to begin to map the network of active agents partaking during this vibrant period. Paying additional focus on the archives, estates and documents that highlight performance art in post-war Japan to begin to consider a larger history of performance art in East Asia. This research will be presented in a series of exhibitions planned over 2017 - 2018.
The purpose of my research is to understand the development of Japanese performance art in terms of its interconnectivity to other performance art histories in East Asia. Specifically in regards to Korea and China.
I will be focusing on Japanese performance collectives such as the Hi-Red Center and Zero Dimension, whilst looking at the photo archives of photographers and journalist that were present during this period. This will include speaking to the institutions, universities, and gallery's that work with the members of these collectives, and which represent the estates of its members.
Additional focus will be placed on the 'non-art' groups that were also utilizing public space as a space of demonstration and civil activism in post-war Japan.
