During my residency at Tokyo Wonder Site I propose to create a short stop-motion animation along with drawings and 3D printed objects exploring contemporary digital still-life. I will animate traditional still life subjects including fruit, ceramics and flowers (collected from Tokyo grocers and flower shops) along with plasticine forms and 3D printed sculptures. Much like a frame in an animation that captures a slice of time between the illusion of motion - my 3D sculptures will likewise capture precise moments of transformation. I work in traditional frame by frame camera based stop-motion animation that is rendered and sequenced with digital software. Objects and materials perform before a camera lens and are moved incrementally to create the illusion of motion when seen at 24 frames per second.
My process will involve drawing, writing and collecting objects and materials in Tokyo to be animated in an intuitive and improvisational manner.
I look forward to visiting many museums and galleries during my residency period including but not limited to: Museum of Japanese Animation Studio, National Art Center Tokyo, Toei Animation Gallery, Suginami Animation Museum, Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Idemitsu Museum of Arts and SCAI The Bathhouse. I also hope to collect objects for my animation from various markets and flower shops as well as exploring 3D printing fab labs in Tokyo.
