Purpose of the residency

We want to learn more about the anti-seismics measures of the buildings' foundations. We also see in the prevention training - designed to have a collective and coordinate response in case of earthquakes - a kind of choreography that creates social link. The seismic risk induces the awareness of a possible vulnerability, a reconsideration of our confidence in the technology, and leads to the necessity to absorb the impermanence.
We want to approach the nuclear dimension in Japan because of its elusiveness that we think to be an important notion of Japanese aesthetic. Beyond the question of phasing out nuclear energy, the conception of the long term storage areas requires monumental properties which lead us to consider time scales that have never previously faced humankind.

Plan during the residency

During this residency we would like to probe and 'sound' the spaces in order to feel what haunts them (individual or national history, town site residents customs, wears and tears which are indicative of the weathering...), for, when possible, temporarily inhabit them with our pieces that we consider as silent stir or light interferences. We may use some of the interstitial and unused spaces (balconies, showcases...) we heard it is possible to rent in Tokyo. We also hope it would give us the opportunity to exchange our perspectives with Japanese artists about Japanese aesthetic and sensibility, and about the questions around the nuclear (civilian energy and its risks, military use).
