I believe, to understand ourselves better we have to travel and no place could have been more alluring to me during the last years than Tokyo with its vibrant art scene and constant reimagination. During my stay in the city I will further develop a project that we are working on since some time. Our fashion project "Schleier Mayer" focuses on veils and disguises and poses the question what each individual wants to hide from the public eye. We have held intergenerational design workshops, discussed our prototypes in a pop up store and created a show for the big stage. My stay at Tokyo Wonder Sites provides the perfect opportunity to start research in the city while being in an exciting and stimulating environment of other artists.
During my stay at TWS I will work with Muslims living in Tokyo. I am interested in their migration experiences and how they are able to integrate religious and cultural obligations into their daily lives in the context of the presumably very different culture of Japan. Leaving the context of Germany's own discourse on veils, I hope to learn to look at the meaning of showing or hiding your face from a different angle. I will work with interviews, mental maps, urban explorations, sketches and photography as well as small performances in public space.
