The hybrid identity of Tokyo's urban space, defined by non-standard and anonymous architectures, became a focus for the world's attention with the publication of Made in Tokyo by Atelier Bow-wow, which celebrates its fifteenth anniversary the upcoming year.
Made in Tokyo is a snapshot taken fifteen years ago. The Made in Tokyo: 15th Year Update project proposes to update it, to take again the pulse of Tokyo through the same 70 constructions, revisiting the buildings that were examined fifteen years ago by Kaijima, Kuroda and Tsukamoto, redrawing and rephotographing them once again, including their evolution.
Using these specific examples as 70 case studies, the project seeks to analyze how the city has evolved during the last fifteen years, generating a debate about economical, social and technological local changes.
Made in Tokyo: 15th Year Update will incorporates two complementary formats, photography and drawing, which will enable two parallel research readings. During the six-week stay, 70 photographs will be taken and posted to Instagram (@madeintokyoupdate) and 70 axonometric views will be drawn, one for each building. Each analitical drawing will overlap a past and present state, and will be uploaded onto the project website www.madeintokyoupdate.net
During the residency, Open Walks will be organized as public events, free for all to participate, ideal interludes for debating the urban transformation of the city.
As a general working methodology, the project aims to learn through observation, working from the findings that are documented, analysed and catalogued. From record to reflection, furthering knowledge that enhances the practice itself.
