Participating Project | Research Residency Program |
---|---|
Activity Based | United Kingdom |
Period | 2015.10 - 2015.11 |
I aim to utilise the research residency as a way to explore the intersection between craft, design and industry in the district of Sumida, Tokyo through a direct engagement with the community of makers, Sumida City Office, and atelier visits. I also aim to visit Tokyo design week, disseminate my research ideas amongst the design community, and develop a collaborative project with local craftspeople with the aid of Sumida City Office.
I will research the intersection between craft, design and industry in the district of Sumida, Tokyo by visiting workshops, visiting archives and collecting oral histories through the aid of Sumida City Office. I will be primarily focusing on the glass craft of Edo Kiriko and will visit the "small Glass Library" as well as the Seiko Archives at the Seiko Museum in Sumida.
These visits will inform my existing exposure and connection with Sumida and its makers and will provide me with information and material to start a series of design dialogues in the intersection of design, craft and industry. Finally, I will endeavor to develop a series of making and material experiments that will be made in collaborations with the craftsmen in Sumida.
