I plan to determine the best responses to my 20-question survey of Japanese people living in Japan. (The survey can be viewed in Japanese here, and in English here.) The survey seeks to gather the names of people/characters/personas to represent each of the extreme characteristics outlined in my Minerals series (hard, soft, transparent, opaque, etc.). I will research each of the names that appears multiple times in any given category in order to understand the link between the candidate and the characteristic. The goal is to distill the data down into a final selection of 20 personas for use in the next phase of my series.
Using the internet, interpreters, local libraries, museums and other outlets of pop culture in Japan, I will become familiar with the names and doings of hundreds of public personas that register as "known" in the collective consciousness of modern Japan. Thanks to TWS's network of contacts in Japan, I hope to gain insight into the Japanese point of view and find out how much of it, if any, overlaps with my American point of view. Will any of the famous faces remain the same in the Japanese version of Minerals?
Finalists for each category will be determined in part (and where possible) by popular vote. I hope to resolve these questions, again, through interaction with the people associated with Tokyo Wonder Site.
By the end of my residency, the goal is to have useable images of each of the selected personas so that I can go on to produce the next phase of my series.
