During the residency at TWS, I will focus on researching primarily how the current Japanese art scene and artists in Tokyo have been responding to catastrophic events such as the recent nuclear disaster. I would like to make contact with local art communities and research these artists/art works by visiting art museums, galleries, and art institutions in Tokyo and other parts of Japan. I will have dialogues with them about these concerns and hope to find the evidence that artists are attempting to pose the questions of how the disaster affected and possibly changed the context in art practice and mainly in culture.
I will be wandering around the sites of Tokyo exploring the neighborhoods of Tokyo to get used to the city and visiting as many art venues as possible, such as art museums, art institutions, and galleries in Tokyo. I will also contact local artists to visit their studios to exchange visions, concepts, and ideas through out dialogues and interviews if possible. I will also attempt to reconnect with Japanese artist friends and art people including art curators and directors who I have met in New York and also attempt to make new connections.
