Purpose of the residency

I have been presented works that incorporate historical fragments of particular lands and spaces. In addition, while using a variety of media, I have been interested in how to formulate those works into the forms of projects and exhibitions in museums. Recent years, my interest has extended to commercial areas such as art fair. The starting point was my own experience in Art Basel Hong Kong, in which I participated last year. My work presented there was based on Hong Kong's history of occupations and related signings, eventually created in cooperation with local craftsmen. Reputation of this work was good, while it also obtained interesting criticism. My motivation to apply for your residency program is simply that I would like to work in this way once again. That is, I would like to explore possibilities of doing projects by means of artist-in-residency with research of the local issues, in collaboration with local people, all of which is unusual in the context of the commercialized art fair. By obtaining this opportunity, I will definitely set foot in a new phase of my artistic practice, the experience surely having a great impact on my future. In that sense, I believe now is the best timing for me.

Plan during the residency

I aim to work incorporating the nation of Switzerland and regional characteristics of Basel. On top of that, I would like to attempt a collaborative project with the local community, tackling the theme of "value". The period of the residency in Basel is from spring to summer. Because it is not a snow season like winter, ski boots would be surely asleep in each household. I will try to collect them by visiting local houses. Of course they would say, "Why are you dealing with ski boots in this season?" I will start my project from such a conversation. Eventually, people would gather in front of the collected, unseasonable ski boots, where dialogues would arise. It might look useless, but it would be surely a scene where there is a hope. Of course, depending on an actual research in the field, I will explore the direction of the work and exhibition. Here, I present the keyword "summer ski boots" as a symbol of worthlessness. Coinciding with Art Basel, which directly deals with value, this project will begin in the very place . As of now, I am thinking of a work that will ultimately include actions, such as performances, to do with or simply using "summer ski boots." Fortunately, there is also a ballet music called Basel Concerto. Furthermore, I will also try some physical works with the ski boots as the subject. That peculiar plastic colors and solid details are the hiddencharms (commercial values) of the material.
