I plan to trace the movement of people and the dynamics of different public environments applying original processes using lens-based media. The focus of research will be capturing moments when multi directional movement becomes homogenous and when a common goal directs crowds in a common movement, physical and psychological. I would like to trace the collective choreography of such rhythms of movement in commuting, celebrating, parading, demonstrating etc. in photographic film-strips to seek an understanding of the perception of movement and the construction of personal space in Japanese culture. How do we engage, dis-engage, initiate, or follow movement in crowds? I am interested in the negotiation of identity and personal space in public places through small maintenance rituals of the everyday, like greetings.
During a month's research residency in Tokyo I will extend my research into the overlapping relationship between Stillness and Movement and how potential narratives are structured, specifically in panoramic images and how this is reflected in Japanese visual culture. This will be structured into two main strands of research: I will explore movement patterns of crowds in Tokyo and take photographic panoramic film-strips and portrait street photographs in public environments. In parallel I will be visiting collections of E-maki in Tokyo and Kyoto at museums and private collections. I will reserach into the way we diplay, read and experience images and the temporlities they evoke.
