Purpose of the residency

My purpose of participating in residency program at Tokyo Wonder Site is the hope for a professional exchange, exhibiting and researching in Tokyo. I hope to professionalize my work, to present it here and discuss it. That would open the chance for a critical reflection, as well as the chance to meet other artists, activists and cultural workers who are concerned about the similar topics on which Petra Kübert, my collaborator, and me are currently working. The chance to get to know and to work in Tokyo / Japan with the possibility to point out differences in the treatments of the so called public urban space, would highly support myself in my research process and widen my understanding on the different processes which are going on in Europe / Berlin and inspire the work with my collaborator Petra Kübert.

Plan during the residency

In my three month long stay in Tokyo I would like to continue with the artistic research-project about the initiation of urban spaces and the production of their images. In the past years together with Petra Kübert, I have worked on the issues of privatisation of public spaces and its impact of aesthetic and social changes especially in Berlin. Processes of gentrification were a topic, displacement of poor population to the outskirts of the city, and as well the (self critical-) reflection in which way lifestyle, art and culture plays a role in this development. I would like to describe my stay as a productive artistic research in progress. Planed presentation so far: exhibition of the latest installation, artist talk with an inside view into the current research process and ways of working (e.g. as open studio visit), an artistic walk through the city.
