Purpose of the residency

Starting from the question of the meaning of "home" and "identity" and my artistic interest in places that are connected to history, familiarity and memory I will study residential areas and detached houses in Tokyo against the backdrop of different movements and phenomena such as metabolism, void metabolism, commersidence and subdivision. The underlying questions are: What is the status of metabolic architecture? What are representational buildings and where are non-intentional representations to be found and how are they used? What are the options on how they can be visually perceived and interpreted from an artistic perspective?

Plan during the residency

1. Continue research on traditional Japanese residential architecture and examples of its occurrence in contemporary architecture
2. Selecting visual representations of "Void Metabolism", "Commersidence" and "Subdivurban/ Subdivision" through on site research and interviews with architects and artists.
3. Potential further questions to be asked and tested will be how the evolvement of temporary houses in Japan after the catastrophe in March 2011 created an idea of a "home for all". Moreover, whether this had an effect on the division between the private and the public and whether this eventually led to the creation of different or new forms of spaces for the community.
4. Creating a new series of photography around above mentioned architectural topics (changing boundaries between the inside and the outside, metabolism and gaps between private and public).
5. Create new paper collages with new material mainly from Japanese architecture magazines.
