In my current art practice I am developing in material form (sculpture and installation) ideas around how surfaces in architecture interact with the human body and its surfaces to 'make space'. I am interested in the idea that this can occur in non-monumental and non-permanent forms. The purpose of the residency at TWS is to research dimensions of traditional domestic Japanese architecture that bear a relation to these interests, in particular, the historical development of the use of tatami mats and the shoji and fusama screens as well as the ritual of removing shoes as a marker of exterior-interior threshold. I will also be researching the continuation and transformations of aspects of these practices in a number of contemporary Japanese architects.
During the course of the residency I will be visiting a number of historical sites including the Katsura Detached Palace, Imanishi House, Kyu Asakura House and Hakogi Sennenya House. I will also be researching at a number of contemporary architectural works by Shiguru Ban, Kenga Kuma, Terunobu Fujimori and Tezuka Architects. In the studio sketches will be developed toward a future work that will begin to incorporate and develop these ideas as well as a possible small-scale installation on site.
