Purpose of the residency
I am participating in this program to develop and explore myself an artist - mentally and artistically. I am very interested in cultural exchange and what I can learn from living in a different context. I am excited about working and sharing experiences with artists from Japan and other countries. I want to expose myself to different ways of collaborating together with other artists. It is hard for Timorese artists to get out of Timor, so another purpose is to share what I get personally from participating in this program with my peers here in Timor so they can also benefit from my experience.
Plan during the residency
I am interested in comparing old and new cultures (of both Japan and Timor) and what relevance this has on present day events. I plan to visit museums, art galleries and talk with other artists about old and new culture in Japan. I will take photos of old and new cultural objects and identities. I will be using wood, found objects, metals, so I hope to visit some areas where people throw away used items - metal objects and other recyclable rubbish etc. I would like to be involved in artistic exchanges such as workshops and artist talks. I would like to run some small sculpture and installation workshops with students and other artists. I also will explore new techniques that I am exposed to through working with other artists.
