As a responsive artist fascinated by in the irks of hyper-capitalism, I hope my practice will benefit by visiting and working in a country where consumerist culture is dominant. Specifically I am curious of how Japan may be dealing with an assumed recession and what inspirations can be gleaned from the cultural aftermath that may exist. During my stay I will collate research for a new body of artifacts and actions inspired by elements of Japanese culture such as Cos-play and fetishized hyper-consumerism.
After visiting sites of cultural significance, in particular Malls, to glean materials and document the visual language of Tokyo, I hope to commence with the creation of projects that spontaneously take advantage of local materials, concepts and inspirations. As well as the possible creation of an Artists' Book, I hope to create a series site-specific installations in the public realm as cunning 'gifts' to Japan.
