By participating at in the Tokyo Wonder Site program, it is my goal to experience everyday life in Tokyo and process this research into a series of meaningful projects that stay true to the spirit of the city, as opposed to the generic stereotypes prevalent in Western media. I have long been enamored with Japanese culture, including the country's literature, manga, and film, and it is truly an honor to be able to spend time in the city and country that has inspired some of my favorite writers, artists and filmmakers including Haruki Murikami, Osamu Tezuka, Akira Kurosawa, and Hayao Miyazaki.
I plan to use my time at the Tokyo Wonder Site immersing myself in the culture and everyday life of Tokyo to feed my research for a number of projects, paying particular attention to worlds of Japanese manga, film and literature. I will take this research and apply it to a variety of short stories for a potential future collection, as well as for the script for a hybrid manga-Western graphic fiction project. It my goal to see the true life of everyday Tokyo, as opposed to the tired stereotypes that are recycled over and over again in Western media.
