In 2007, French President Nicolas Sarkozy stated his wish for international consultation on a «new comprehensive development project for Greater Paris» which would bring together the professional expertise of ten architecture and urban planning agencies. The consultation process was launched at the beginning of 2008 and is being overseen by a steering committee made up of representatives of the State, the City of Paris, the Île-de-France Regional Authority and the Île-de-France Mayoral Association, with the support of a scientific committee of 23 qualified figures. Since June 2008, each team has been working to complete the two components of the consultation: "the 21st century post-Kyoto metropolis" and "the present and future analysis of the Paris agglomeration". In 2009, the "Le Grand Pari de l'agglomeration parisienne" exhibition was presented the results of the consultation. Francis Rambert curated this exhibition that has attracted 220000 visitors in Paris, and enriched by new themes that will now be presented in Tokyo.
The goal of the symposium is to organize a debate on metropolitan matters in order to foster the Think tank about the "Post Kyoto metropolis" that has been launched in France by the Grand Paris project. This debate will be enriched by different approaches and strategies coming from European teams of architects and from Japanese teams. A bunch of 12 japanese teams will present their work applied to the megalopolis of Tokyo: "Tokyo 2050, 12 visions for the metropolis". In this frame, I will present the Grand Paris exhibition and make a lecture about the7 strengh-ideas that has come out of the 10 teams invited by president Sarkozy to rethink over the Parisian metropolis.
This event will occur in the wake of the International union of architects congress that will open at the beginning of the week. That means a lot of contacts and visits of architectural firms. Bseides, I will participate to a trip organized especially (by Manuel Tardit's school) in order to discover the different scales of the Naoshima project focusing on architecture, landscape, and contemporary art. (I have been moderating a big lecture in Paris on that subject with Sanaa( Seijima & Nishizawa), Sambuichi, Boltanski.
