Purpose of the residency

During a residency at Tokyo Wonder Site I'm interested in focusing on the tradition of using props in the Kabuki theater tradition and how this way of using objects could inform my work. Most of all I'm curious how the division of two kind of props work, the Hommono (real things) actually used in daily life and Koshiraemono (created things) created in order to be effectively shown on stage, like giant swords. It almost seems like this double-take on realism, where the object get transformed by man's inner wishes and fears or by speed and force, foresaw the logic of the possibilities with film cutting and the close-up.

Achievements of the residency
During my stay at Tokyo wonder Site I have done research on Kabuki. Through meeting people involved in the world of Kabuki, such as actors, propmakers, fans or Theater Management I have got a deeper understanding of this faschinating form of Artistic expression. During my research I have come to realize that the History and Tradition of Kabuki also reflects the history of Japan and is a great tool in order to grasp this subject. Tokyo Wonder Site has been emmensly helpful, both in setting up meetings with the right people for my research and providing me with answers to all the questions raised by my meeting with the culture of Kabuki and Japan.
I have been very fortunate to gain access to the behind the scenes of the Kabuki-Za and the Craft people surrounding it. Many people have helped me in countless ways and this has also showed me how vital the scence of Kabuki is and the passion people behind and in front of the Stage Curtain feel.
Outcome of the exchange
During my reasearch I have continuously made images insired by the research or as tools to push further. My intention is to collect these and the texts I have written in a publication. The idea of using the Kabuki as a tool for a different kind of curatorial inetervention is still my intention and I plan to somehow bring the young actor Yafu Bandou in to the project as we have already started to have a dialoge and he is interested in exploring the energy of Kabuki in the field of Contemporary Art.
