Purpose of the residency

The exercise of research will take the form of a practical workshop series in which I aim to work with a local group of people. The workshops will consist of exploring the pervasion of media technologies in the urban environment and assessing their impact upon people's everyday lives. It will evolve to a collaboration in which these media technologies are used for creative expression in our relationship with our surroundings. Also throughout the residency I will be making interviews with city planners, architects, artists etc. and writing an academic paper based on these investigations.

Plan during the residency

OPEN STUDIO 2009
Tokyo continues to be a key model of reference in the discourse of multi-media urban landscapes, to many it still represents a metropolis of technological saturation and carries much mythology in this context. But Ota wishes to cut through this mythology and examine the very real impact of the 'media city' upon the people living here, aiming to find new relations and new approaches to the city, it allows us to consider this very particular cultural, technological, economic and political context and points towards our potential for authorship within these systems but also towards our responsibilities which lie here too.
