The purpose of my stay at Tokyo Wonders Site was to do research to the Japanese visual art and the Japanese contemporary and traditional performance arts.
This research I used for the new photo series I made during my residence; returning topics in my research were:
• The collaboration with Japanese performance artists/dancers
• The literally inspiration from the art of Japanese drawing and painting
• The intertwinement between the fantasy- and real world in the daily life of Tokyo.
OPEN HOUSE 2008
The series Tokyo Monogatari is inspired by the typical aspects of Tokyo's daily life, the ancient Manga of Hokusai, the Noh and Kabuki theatre and the hidden puppeteers of Bunraku.
The series expresses at one side the daily life of Tokyo and at the other hand the exaggeration of bodily shapes drawn in manga in a photograph. Working together with professional Japanese dancers was a challenge to make this possible.
Outcome of the Residency
Visiting Tokyo for the first time it was a challenge to put together all the typical aspects of the city and to show its atmosphere. The combination of the contemporary life and the traditional cultural values is what made my research in Tokyo fascinating. This reflects in the series; 'Tokyo Monogatari'.
