To pursue a project in Tokyo for the interviewing of contemporary Japanese composers, for a book concerning the state of concert music in Japan, "post-Takemitsu"
Wednesday Lounge: Artist Talk Robert Carl
1. Identifying composers to interview
2. Arranging for interviews
3. Interviewing composers, both at the TWS, and at selected sites throughout Tokyo
While at the Tokyo Wonder site, I was able to interview 25 Japanese composers, fulfilling the goal of my project. The Site's staff was extremely helpful in arranging many of these contacts, as well as making available some composers I might not have otherwise been able to meet, such as Joji Yuasa. The TWS provided a forum for me to give a presentation on my own music (with superb translation), which was well attended, by a sophisticated and inquisitive audience. It also arranged that I could use the facility for interviewing in the month following my residency, which helped enormously in the logistics of scheduling. Finally, the TWS also arranged for a masterclass in composition which I gave to six young composers from throughout the Tokyo area (and who, it turned out, each studied with a composer whom I had interviewed!)
My deepest thanks goes to the Tokyo Wonder Site for its hospitality, efficiency, and assistance.
Attached are three jpgs., which show me with three composers I interviewed: Jo Kondo, Tokuhide Niimi, and Mr.Nodaira.
