Purpose of the residency

My project investigates the Japanese noise scene through its spatial, social, performative, and sonic dynamics, examining how music communities construct listening environments through frequency, volume, technology, space, and audience perception. Inspired by the Japanese concept of ichi-go ichi-e, I will immerse myself in Tokyo’s experimental music ecosystem through performances, interviews, studio visits, and venue research. The residency will generate documentation for future curatorial projects connecting Brazil and Japan while providing the foundation for my upcoming master’s research on listening practices and sonic communities.

Plan during the residency

• Immerse myself in Tokyo’s experimental music ecosystem by regularly attending concerts, performances, exhibitions, and other sound-based events.
• Build relationships with artists, curators, independent organizers, academics, and cultural institutions working across experimental music and sound art.
• Explore the diversity of listening practices within the Japanese noise scene, with particular attention to the cultural and social contexts in which they emerge.
• Collect references, archival material, conversations, and personal observations to support my academic research and long-term curatorial practice.
• Identify opportunities for future collaborations, artistic exchanges, and international projects linking experimental music communities in Japan and Brazil.
