Ohtake, who has moved back and forth between the US and Tokyo, and Park, who was born in South Korea, raised in Australia, and later moved to the US, have both experienced having to reconstruct a personal zone (place where one can remain securely oneself) amid these crossings of borders. Drawing on these experiences, this workshop uses group dialogue to explore ways of making “Habitable Zones” visible. Participants collaborate on an installation in which their respective boundaries overlap, and this flexible space of coexistence is opened to the public on the final day.

Workshop 1: Mapping Your Personal Habitable Zone

Participants will cut fabric or paper into a shape that represents their own habitable zone. They will divide it into three layers and write or draw what feels easy to share, what takes time to share, and what they do not yet want to share. In small groups of two to three people, participants will place their zones on the floor and negotiate where they can overlap and where distance should be kept. Conversations, silences, and moments of hesitation may be recorded only with consent, anonymously and optionally, and used as sound material for the installation.

Workshop 2: Building Our Habitable Zone

Using the fabric zones created on the previous day, participants will place wooden poles at points of contact or overlap and connect them with threads. As the threads are stretched across the space, participants may need to pass through someone else’s zone, making small acts of asking, allowing, refusing, or remaining silent part of the making process. Soft speakers will be installed in the completed structure, allowing visitors to hear recordings connected to specific zones only when they bring a magnet close to the speaker.

Exhibition

The installation will be opened to the public as a space composed of fabric zones, threads, wooden poles, recordings, and soft speakers developed through the workshops. Visitors can walk through the structure, pause within it, and use magnets to listen to sounds, physically experiencing how distance and boundaries between people shift.

OHTAKE Sao｜Born in 2000. Lives and works in New York and Tokyo. She is an artist exploring connections between people and the places they inhabit. Her work examines how political tensions affect everyday life and relationships, and how differing values may be bridged through tactile, nonverbal encounters. She creates sculptures and installations using soft materials and sound.

PARK Jiyou | Born in 1996. Lives and works in New York and Seoul. She is an interactive media artist creating artificial lifeforms and responsive sensory systems with light, sound, machine perception, and tactile materials. Her work explores when technological objects are sensed as presences, building encounters where humans and nonhuman beings perceive and respond to one another.
