In this fascinating program of recent music for flute duo, BINARY will explore works that push the instruments and the performers to their limits, both musically and physically. Not restricting themselves to the standard concert flute, McKay and Andonovska will also be featuring exploratory compositions for the alto and bass flutes. Come and be surprised at the intimate, powerful and energy-infused voice of BINARY.

BINARY

Janet and Lina's worlds collided at the 2013 Australian Flute Festival where their passion for interpreting recently penned compositions was fulfilled through the NOW flute ensemble. In 2014, the BINARY duo debuted at Brisbane's Judith Wright Centre through the generous support of a Pozbile crowd-funding campaign. In late 2014 the pair took their project to Chicago's Elastic Arts space, and in December 2015 they performed in Japan as part of the Tokyo Experimental Festival where their performance was awarded the Grand Prize of the festival. Janet and Lina are committed to performing music in an innovative and immersive way; this is evident through their solo careers that span from teaching individually and in a workshop setting, the numerous community music projects that both artists take part in, to the collectives and ensembles that they are both members of outside the BINARY project. The two have plans to commission more works for this combination in the future, to release a recording of their core repertoire, and take this project on the road and win fans over with the spectrum of sounds that can be conjured up by two flutes.

Lina Andonovska


Quickly gaining recognition internationally as a fearless and versatile artist, flautist Lina Andonovska has performed in concert halls around Europe, Asia, USA/Canada, and Australia. Critically acclaimed for her interpretation of recently composed works, Rolling Stone Magazine hailed her performance of Bun-Ching Lam's piccolo concertino as "superbly played, (ranging) from sustained 'somebody-please-get-that-tea-kettle' squeaks to the flit and flutter of its beautifully lilting trills..." An Asialink Artist (2015) and Freedman Fellow (2013), she leads a diverse career as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. Lina has collaborated with an impressive range of artists including eighth blackbird, Shara Worden, Bryce and Aaron Dessner (The National), stargaze and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. As an orchestral player she has appeared with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (UK), Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland Symphony Orchestras, Orchestra Victoria and was co-principal flute of Southbank Sinfonia (UK). As soloist she has performed concerti with Southbank Sinfonia, Orchestra Victoria and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Lina has been artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre, Canada and was musician in residence with Ireland's Crash Ensemble in 2015. Janet McKay


prize-winning flautist committed to the performance and development of new music. She has just completed a PhD (Performance at the University of Queensland, researching flutist-composer collaborations. In addition to her M.Mus (Performance) and B.Mus (Hons) she has studied at the Guildhall School of Music (UK) and the Bang on a Can Institute (USA). Janet has performed solo recitals in London, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane. She demonstrates her ongoing commitment to composer and repertoire development by actively commissioning and premiering new works for flute and facilitating composer development workshops. Janet recently co-directed the inaugural UNBOUND Flute Festival in Brisbane which included a composition competition and three days of workshops and performances on contemporary flute. She also co-directed the sonic arts project SUPER CRITICAL MASS (SCM) from 2007-2013, including performances of up to 100 musicians in Central Park New York, to open the new Library of Birmingham (U.K.) and for the Queensland Music Festival.
