Sound, Art & Performance
TEF is a festival which introduces experimental performances and exhibitions focusing on music and sound, and it marks its 9th volume this year. Over a period of two months, this year's festival will offer a unique agenda full of TEF style performances and sound installations.

Mysterious world of prepared piano unraveled by a contemporary music specialist!
Prepared piano is a grand piano whose sounds has had altered by placing objects, such as erasers, wood pieces, and bolts, between or on the strings. This instrument was "invented" in 1940 by an American composer, John Cage, to achieve colorful percussive sounds with only one piano.Although prepared piano is well known in the field of contemporary music, there are few chances to see and listen to its live performance because of its high maintenance character. On the final day of TOKYO EXPERIMENTAL FESTIVAL Vol.9, TWS presents a workshop-concert to "anatomize" the enchantments of this mysterious instrument.
The workshop-performance is conducted by a pianist, Ken'ichi Nakagawa, who is actively works on outreach activities and workshops in addition to playing in concerts. He is also known as a specialist of contemporary music. In the workshop, Nakagawa will guides participants to have various experiences to investigate the prepared piano: observing the whole process of the preparation and comparing the interpretations with the prepared piano and a normal one, for example. In the concert part after the workshop, Nakagawa will play the whole pieces of "Sonatas and Interludes" by J. Cage, the most famous work for prepared piano.
